NTCK works with international artists and theatres who share their artistic passion and love of theater with the global community, in order to challenge and stimulate the Korean theater. NTCK hopes to be an international center for theater where various exciting collaborations and co-productions are created and attract international acclaim.
· Romeo and Juliet (toured)
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, NTCK co-produced Romeo and Juliet with the National Theater of China and the National Theater of Korea. Tian Qinxin, the director of the National Theatre of China and one of the most influential Chinese theater makers today, joined hands with a team of Korean scenographers including Park Dong-woo. The cast included Kang Pil Suk and Jeun Mi Do. Chinese dramatist Lei Ting set Shakespeare’s beloved masterpiece against the backdrop of social and political upheavals during the Cultural Revolution. The Korean premiere in 2012 was followed by performances in Beijing in Shanghai in the following year. The contemporary adaptation earned praise for the way it embraced the value of the classical play.
· Yellow Moon : The Ballad of Leila and Lee
In 2013, TYA Research Center of NTCK invited Tony Graham, a key figure in the young people’s theater in the UK, to present the contemporary classic Yellow Moon. Written by the Scottish playwright David Greig, known for his insightful and fascinating works, the play delivers a thoughtful perspective on the teenage experience of love and life with a solid dramatic structure, lyrical ambience and vivid dialogues. Lee is a troubled teenager, while Leila is a Muslim girl from a middle-class family. Faced with a dead end, they dream of escaping into another world together. Their journey teeming with love, fantasy and mystery considers love as the overriding message in life, and asks questions about the hope and growth that can be found somewhere in life.
