Long Day’s Journey into Night, widely considered to be Eugene O’Neill’s magnum opus, makes us reflect on our families through the portrayal of the Tyrones fraught with love, hatred, loneliness and compassion. Noted for his adroit staging of O’Neill’s realism, Tamiya Kuriyama is an all-around theater director whose works across various genres of performing arts have won the hearts of critics and audiences alike. He brought his production of Long Day’s Journey into Night—premiered in Japan in 2000—to Korea, and presented a powerful portrait of a family tragedy with an imposing ensemble cast, which included Lee Ho Jae, Ye Su-jung, Choi Won Suk, Seo Sang Won and Zhang Zia.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, NTCK co-produced Romeo and Juliet with the National Theater of China and the National Theater of Korea. Tian Qinxin, the director of the National Theatre of China and one of the most influential Chinese theater makers today, joined hands with a team of Korean scenographers including Park Dong-woo. The cast included Kang Pil Suk and Jeun Mi Do. Chinese dramatist Lei Ting set Shakespeare’s beloved masterpiece against the backdrop of social and political upheavals during the Cultural Revolution. The intersecting stage, beautiful songs and emotionally charged dance successfully conveyed images of youthful passion and vicissitudes of life in times of turbulence.
