One of the most anticipated NTCK productions finally takes the stage!

Previously, the NTCK’s Hamlet could not welcome its audience face-to-face on stage due to COVID-19. Much to the dismay of many, it was only made available through the online theater program. This year, that very play finally takes the stage at Myeongdong Theater! Responding to the massive demand for a rerun, Hamlet returns with an overwhelming sense of immersion and a commanding presence, sure to be the hottest production this summer! Standing on stage for the first time in four years, Princess Hamlet declares for all to hear:

“My play is not over yet. I am back on stage.”

A timeless masterpiece transcending 400 years!
The most contemporary Hamlet you’ll ever see!

Hamlet is an immortal masterpiece by world-renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Even after more than 400 years, this revered classic remains very much alive. In this production by the National Theater Company of Korea, contemporary variations are added to the original framework. Theater director Boo Sae-rom scrupulously portrays the journey of Hamlet, the crown princess transformed into an evil princess, and fearlessly delves into the profound depths of human nature. Jeong Jin-sae’s new adaptation infuses the original with modern relevance and topicality, presenting a subtle examination of the characters’ desires. Under the classic question “To be or not to be,” the honed blades of desire clash dynamically, generating a powerful thrill for today's audiences.

Synopsis

Following the sudden death of the old king, a commission of inquiry is established, and soon the case is “closed on reasonable grounds”. Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, overtakes her in the line of succession, ascends the throne, and marries her mother, Queen Gertrude. Hamlet witnesses the former king’s funeral and the new king’s wedding, which take place one after the other. Distraught and confused, she begins to suspect the circumstances of her father's death and seeks to uncover the truth...
