Scapin is back!
The 2019 premiere production and the 2020 re-run of Scapin, the NTCK’s one and only “comedy repertoire”, took the Korean theater world by storm. This year, Scapin is back for yet another season to present a stage filled with acerbic social criticism, a dazzling rhythm and pace, comedy, paradox, pathos, emotions, love, compassion, and even some tears. As the need for fun and laughter becomes greater than ever, Scapin is sure to be an excellent choice this autumn.
Director Lim Do-wan, known as one of the greatest masters of Korean physical theater, adds modern sensibilities to the original play by the French genius playwright Molière. The NTCK’s 2022 production of Scapin sets out to offer a more hilarious and powerful experience to the audience. The play’s exhilarating humor and superb play of language are further complemented by the cast’s fantastic ensemble performance and invigorating live music. It is time to leave all your worries outside the theater, and have a hearty laugh!
Synopsis
“He comes to our rescue whenever we’re in trouble!”
When the curtain rises, playwright Molière appears on stage. He introduces himself, his work and the main characters. Then the story takes off, as everyone in the audience is invited to sing together. Two wealthy men, Argante and Géronte, plan an arranged marriage between their respective children, before setting out on a journey. During their absence, the two children in question each fall in love with someone from an ambiguous background. When they learn of their parents’ marriage plans for them, they turn to Scapin, servant to the household of Geronte, for help. Scapin thus devises a clever strategy to save the day for the young lovers, though not entirely without ulterior motives.
Written by Molière
Molière is one of the greatest masters of French comedy and a celebrated playwright/actor. In 17th century France, where only tragedy was deemed artistic, Molière changed the entire course of theater history by presenting witty satires on stage. The social impact of his work marked the beginning of French comedy. To this day, he remains one of the most widely read writers in France. His timeless popularity means his plays continue to be performed by countless theater companies around the world. The Molière Awards are considered the highest theater honor internationally.
Adapted and directed by Lim Do-wan
Lim Do-wan currently serves as Head of Sadari Movement Lab, and teaches in the Department of Performing Arts at Seoul Institute of the Arts. He graduated from L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in France. As a director, he is widely known for his unique style that emphasizes the language of mime and movements. By presenting on stage movements that are more powerful than words, he has opened a new chapter in the history of Korean physical theater.
