The NTCK’s 2019 production of Scapin (based on Molière’s Scapin the Schemer) was a roaring success that won the hearts of critics and audiences alike. The play returns to stage this year! The 17th century play full of farcical tricks and complications is transformed into a contemporary story at the hands of the director Lim Do-wan. The good-humoured mockery, characterized by modern sensibilities embellishing the original play’s classical structure, catches us off guard like a breath of fresh air. The tightly woven dialogues and lively movements add layers to the vivid characters. The various sound effects stimulate all five senses as well as our imagination. Following numerous requests for a re-run, Scapin sets out to bring down the house once again. The exquisite harmony created by the ensemble gives us a chance to laugh out loud in these difficult times.
Synopsis
“He comes to our rescue whenever we’re in trouble!”
When the curtain rises, playwright Molière appears on stage. He introduces himself, his work and the main characters. Then the story takes off, as everyone in the audience is invited to sing together. Two wealthy men, Argante and Géronte, plan an arranged marriage between their respective children, before setting out on a journey. During their absence, the two children in question each fall in love with someone from an ambiguous background. When they learn of their parents’ marriage plans for them, they turn to Scapin, servant to the household of Geronte, for help. Scapin thus devises a clever strategy to save the day for the young lovers, though not entirely without ulterior motives.
Written by Molière
Molière is one of the greatest masters of French comedy and a celebrated playwright/actor. In 17th century France, where only tragedy was deemed artistic, Molière changed the entire course of theater history by presenting witty satires on stage. The social impact of his work marked the beginning of French comedy. To this day, he remains one of the most widely read writers in France. His timeless popularity means his plays continue to be performed by countless theater companies around the world. The Molière Awards are considered the highest theater honor internationally.
Adapted and directed by Lim Do-wan
Lim Do-wan currently serves as Head of Sadari Movement Lab, and teaches in the Department of Performing Arts at Seoul Institute of the Arts. He graduated from L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in France. As a director, he is widely known for his unique style that emphasizes the language of mime and movements. By presenting on stage movements that are more powerful than words, he has opened a new chapter in the history of Korean physical theater.
