Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s classical masterpiece Faust, praised for its deep insight into human nature, is born as Faust Ending.
Director Jo Kwang-hwa, noted for his cinematic mise-en-scene, portrays the fantastic world view of Faust on stage.
This production—further complimented by Kim Sung-nyu’s multi-dimensional performance in the lead role—presents a new ending shaped by Faust of our time.
Synopsis
Destruction rages around the world, and refugees flock to Faust’s city. Faced with his own limitations as a scholar,
Faust despairs and decides to take his own life. Suddenly,
Mephisto the devil appears before him and offers to restore Faust’s youthful passion in return for his soul.
Then one day, Faust encounters Valentin, a healthy young man, and Gretchen, a pregnant woman with a pure heart.
As their lives fall into chaos and confusion, Mephisto senses his own victory…

Born in 1749 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Johann Worlfgang von Geothe was a German writer and statesman. During his early years, he read ancient Greek and Roman literature as well as the Bible, and received lessons in and various languages including Greek and Latin. He was engaged in various fields of administration such as education, finance, construction, and military for over a decade, and was responsible for the fate of the Weimar theater. In the midst of all this, he continued to publish his works. Geothe’s lifetime masterpiece Faust was completed in 1831. He died the following year at the age of 83.

Jo Kwang-hwa debuted as a playwright in 1992 by winning the Annual Spring Literary Contest. In the following year, Theater Company ZakEunShinHwa’s production of his play Hwanggudo (directed by Choi Yong-hun) earned praise from critics and general audiences alike. He has written several other plays including Cat in Jongno and Ophelia. In 1997, he had his first major directorial success with Impulse of a Man, which earned much praise from both critics and general audiences alike. In 2007, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his directorial debut, he restaged Impulse of a Man with Ryoo Seung-bum and Park Hae-soo, which once again caused quite a sensation in Korea’s theater scene. He works across various genres including musical theater.
