Euripides, the most tragic of poets - Aristotle
The final choice of a woman who loses everything, meet Medea played by actress Lee Hye-young!
The return of actress Lee Hye-young to the stage in 2016 was impressive. <The Seagull> recorded a historic sellout and the audience fell in love with Arkadina who revived on the stage. Now she stands on the stage of Myeongdong Theater once more, as Medea; a woman who loses everything after being abandoned by her husband. Playing a challenging role that fiercely expresses the ‘memory’ of being loved in the past and ‘lust’ for Jason’s love, Medea displays our sensation of being isolated from the world. Joined by the finest actors, including Nam Myeong-ryeol, Kim Jeong-eun, Ha Dong-jun, Park Wan-gyu, and Sohn Sang-gyu, the play will present a top-notch performance.
Robert Alfoldi, the innovator of <The Winter’s Tale> which overwhelmed the audience,
and Jin Tae-ok, master of Korea’s fashion world, get together
<Medea>, a sensational work written by Euripides during the era of male chauvinism, is fantastically reborn by Robert Alfoldi, who shocked audiences with his sensible reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s <The Winter’s Tale> last winter. The play delivers a meaningful message to the contemporary world by dealing with ‘fury’ and ‘empathy’ which are emotions that penetrate from ancient Greece to contemporary Korea. Furthermore, Jin Tae-ok, the master of Korean fashion, beloved for his poetic designs, is participating in a play for the first time. A Greek tragedy by a modern writer who was interested in the violence and sensitivity of humans, direction that will maximize this modernity, and Jin Tae-ok’s costumes which will embroider Park Dong-woo’s minimalist stage. Do not miss the historic event where all of these factors harmonize as one.
Synopsis
Medea rages with fury when her husband Jason, whom she loved with all of her being, leaves her to marry the daughter of King Creon. Fearing her revenge, the king orders Medea to go into exile and her husband rebukes her for her fury. People sympathize with Medea but are not able to stand up and help. In the end, Medea plans vengeance and puts it into action.
