One of the masterpieces of Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie is an autobiographical piece with his own painful past and family history. The Broadway premiere starring Laurette Taylor in 1945 became a smash hit recorded 563 performances. The production brought immediate fame to the great author winning The New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, Sidney Howard Memorial Award and Donaldson Award. The recent Broadway revival by John Tiffany received seven 2014 Tony Award nominations.

2014 hit production of the American masterpiece returns

Director Han is arguably the most celebrated director/playwright in the contemporary Korean theater scene. Her production of The Glass Menagerie at Myeongdong Theater last year was a phenomenal sell-out show during the summer season which is usually very quiet. This is a great opportunity to catch up with the most popular show of the last season with the same strong cast.

Director Han and The Glass Menagerie

For her, drama is not just about text and acting, but something to be seen, listened and felt. Being truthful to her own words, her recent theater works such as Oedipus, Our Town, Antigone and Dante’s Divine Comedy have been highly acclaimed for the breathtakingly poignant and emotionally impactful stages.

Kim Sungyeo is one of celebrity actresses in Korea dubbed as ‘the performer who’s got one thousand faces.’ She also inherited the god-sent voice from singer parents and her long music theater career since she was six years old has now reached to the position of the artistic director of the Korean national Changguk (traditional Korean operetta) company. In her one woman drama with songs, A Fairy in the Wall which celebrated its 10 year anniversary at Myeongdong Theater in February last year, she performs amazing thirty two different characters receiving standing ovations every time. These two legendary female theater ‘gurus’ had finally got together to create another theatrical legend for The Glass Menagerie at Myeongdong Theater last year. The first and successful collaboration of two theater masters (director HAN Taesook and KIM Actress Sungyeo) in the Korean theater was well received so returns to Myeongdong Theater to please audience members once again.
