A Desperate Longing for My Self-Sacrificing and Loving Mother!
- JOO Wan-Joong, Chosun Daily
The 15th Anniversary Performance of one of Korea’s Most Beloved Theater Pieces!
The playwright/director Lee wrote Mother inspired by his own mother’s real life story. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Mother represents all the Korean mothers who have weathered severe hardships in the early and mid 20th century – during the Japanese colonial era, the Korean War and the following drastic social changes. Despite being uneducated and economically distressed, our mothers have given their children unconditional love and limitless kindness. The show brings us back to the mother’s arms.
Lee Youn-Taek, one of the most renowned directors in Korea, comes back to the Myeongdong with this moving story after Bodas de Sangre and A Family on the Road in 2014. A highly prolific director he is, he will visit us again with the replay of his best work YeonSan, the Problematic this coming July.
Sohn Sook, the winner of Baeksang Arts Awards for Best Performance, realizes a mother’s love on the stage!
At the premiere of Mother in 1999, Sohn Sook promised to play the title role for the next 20 years. Keeping her promise last fifteen years, the show has been received favorable reviews from both critics and audiences internationally including enthusiastic applauses and standing ovation in Taganka Theater, Moscow in 2000.
For the Myeongdong production, along with the legendary actress Sohn Sook, most representative actors from Theater Street Company including Kim So-Hee, Kim Mi-Sook and Yoon Jung Seob, three winners of Dong-A Theater Awards for best performance join to make a dream cast.
Synopsis
