Night has fallen. When night arrives, so does he.

In a funeral hall steeped in immeasurable sorrow, two women come face to face.

 One woman with hollow eyes gazes at the remnants of the deceased, 

while the other, with a glittering silver tongue, approaches and takes her place rather boisterously. 

Their uneasy encounter is marked by an invisible line. 

However, as they each confront their own vulnerabilities, the boundary between them fades, and they begin to understand each other. 

“Whenever someone asks about the nature of our relationship, I say we’re a nuisance to each other.”

Looking into each other despite vagueness.

In today’s society, where ‘I’ takes precedence over ‘we’ and everyone emphasizes their individual opinions, 

where people are busy competing for the best and measuring efficiency, what moments do we hold on to and preserve in life? 

This play introduces characters who exist clearly and vividly, even in the absence of light. 

Navigating through the layers of moments obscured by social status, they live in solidarity.

 As fleeting moments continue and gradually become clearer,

 these characters pose a question to those of us who have grown accustomed to individualism: What does ‘togetherness’ mean to you?

[Changzak Gonggam: Writers] Silver Tongue written by Park Ji-sun and directed by Youn Hyesook 

The Changzak Gonggam: Writers program, 

established to showcase contemporary plays in collaboration with emerging playwrights, is now in its third year. 

Selected through last year’s open call, playwright Park Ji-sun’s new work Silver Tongue will be presented on stage as part of the main repertoire for 2024. 

Playwright Park Ji-sun has received critical acclaim for such works as Gothicextra Girl and Silkworm. 

Her latest play, Silver Tongue,

has been brought to life through extensive workshops, research, and interviews centered around the theme of ‘caregiving.’

 Presented on stage under the masterful and captivating direction of Youn Hyesook, 

whose accolades include the Excellence Award in the Theater Category at the 1st Seoul Arts Awards and the Doosan Yeongang Arts Award,

 the production offers a heartfelt portrayal of characters who have been overlooked by society.  

Eun-soo visits the same funeral home every season. 

Each time, she runs into Jeong-eun, a well-meaning but meddlesome funeral home assistant, who, 

in fact, helped with the funeral of Eun-soo’s late son. Despite Eun-soo’s attempts to avoid her, 

Jeong-eun always finds a way to approach her and sit next to her, offering conversation, food, drink, and companionship. 

As a result, Eun-soo becomes increasingly intrigued by Jeong-eun. Then, one day, 

Jeong-eun starts telling a nonsensical story, claiming that she has a glittering ‘silver tongue.’ 

Written by Park ji sun

Park Ji-sun’s prowess as a playwright has been widely recognized, 

having been selected as a playwright for the NTCK Creative Belt in 2020 and winning several prestigious awards,

 including the ARKO Literary Creation Fund in 2022, the Daejeon Playwriting Award Grand Prize in 2021, 

and the Tongyeong Theatre Arts Festival Playwriting Award.

 She constantly reflects on the concept of a society of care, where everyone can live and die naturally. 

Her new play, Silver Tongue, developed for this year’s Changzak Gonggam: Writers,

 explores the themes of care solidarity and universal care as highlighted in The Care Manifesto.
